PSA Card Grading: A UK Collector's Guide

PSA card grading from the UK is a process: decide how the cards are getting there, check every one hard before it leaves the house, package it so the cardboard survives the post, then wait. The mistakes I've made were always in the prep, never in the posting.

Direct or a middleman: the first decision

You have two ways to get cards to PSA from Britain. You can set up an account, fill out the submission form yourself, and post the cards across the Atlantic. Or you can use a UK submission service that collects your cards, handles the customs paperwork, submits the whole batch under their account, and sends the slabs back to you when they land.

The direct route is cheaper on paper and you keep control of the whole thing. The middleman route costs a handling fee on top, but it removes the form-filling and the uneasy feeling of your best card sitting in a depot somewhere. If the phrase "card grading UK" brings up both options, that is why.

I've used the direct route for a single high-value card and a middleman for a batch of football cards, and both work. The one thing I will not do again is send a card in a toploader with tape over the sleeve.

Your PSA card grading checklist, in order

If you remember one section of this, make it this one. Run through it before every card, in this order, and keep the ones that fail at home.

• Corners. Look at each corner under a loupe. White dots you cannot see with the naked eye are still dents to a grader's light source.
• Edges. Rock the card slightly in the light. Any rough spot or chip along an edge will cap the grade.
• Surface. Print lines, roller marks, scuffs. Topps and Panini football cards are printed to a good standard these days, which means every flaw reads clearly.
• Centering. Hold the card up against the border widths. Most collectors aim for 55/45 and settle for 60/40. Past that, the grade caps itself before you have paid for the envelope. Our guide to what graders actually measure sets out the numbers properly.

If centering is not something you trust your eyes on, run the card through the centering calculator before you commit to sending it. It won't tell you if a corner is soft, but it will stop you sending an obvious fail.

Graders use strong magnification, and they are not having a lovely afternoon. I once sent a card with a tiny dimple on the back because the front looked mint, and the grade came back exactly where that dimple put it. If you can feel a dent with a fingernail, it fails the surface check before anything else.

The grading card case question

If you have been searching for the right grading card case to send the card out in, stop. You do not send cards in a slab. The tamper-evident case is what comes back to you, not what goes out.

What goes out is a penny sleeve and a semi-rigid card saver. Penny sleeve on the card first, card saver on top, then tape the whole thing between two pieces of stiff cardboard and slide it into a padded envelope or a Jiffy bag. Do not send screwdown holders, magnetic one-touch cases, or a toploader taped shut like a prisoner transport. The grader has to get the card out, so make it easy for them.

Packing is where the damage happens. Tape the cardboard, not the card saver. A card saver that has to be wrestled open is a card saver that rolls your corners.

Shipping from the UK and the waiting

Now the part every British collector worries about: postage, packaging and the wait. Postage costs what it costs depending on weight and the tracked service you choose, and I would never skip the tracking. For a single valuable card, the tracking is worth the extra.

Customs declares the cards as printed collectibles. Fill the form in honestly, keep your submission receipt, and do not post in the same week as a bank holiday unless you enjoy watching a parcel sit in a depot for four days.

Before the parcel goes in the post, photograph each card next to the submission form. If anything goes missing, or if there is a dispute over condition, you have evidence of what you sent. It takes five minutes and you will never regret doing it.

What goes wrong in practice: the tracking goes quiet, nothing updates for days, and you convince yourself the parcel is lost. It almost never is. The genuinely annoying part is the wait at the far end, because turnaround depends on the service tier you chose and how busy they happen to be that month. That is out of your hands, so factor it in before you send a card you were hoping to sell quickly.

The other card grading companies worth knowing

PSA is not the only game, and the UK has its own homegrown graders now. Names like Ace Card Grading grade cards over here, which means your cards never leave the country and the travel time drops out of the equation. If you collect Premier League and Match Attax in volume and want protection to a consistent standard, they are worth a serious look.

There are others too, MGC Card Grading among them, each with its own slab and its own fee structure. At card fairs you now see British slabs sitting next to PSA and BGS on dealers' tables, so the choice is no longer academic.

The honest trade-off is resale. For international sales, and for the growing basketball side of the hobby, PSA still carries the most weight — that is just how the market settled. The rest of the field produce a perfectly good slab, but a PSA slab is what a buyer in the US or Japan searches for first. If the card is heading into your own binder and not onto eBay, the label matters less than you think.

When the cards come back

The first slab arriving is oddly emotional, and then you open the submission and read the grades. Some you called correctly, some are lower than you hoped, and occasionally one surprises you upwards. Check the case for damage in transit straight away. A cracked slab devalues a card instantly.

If the grade is worse than you expected, think before you break it open. PSA has a review process, but you pay for it again, so it only makes sense for genuine mistakes, not for disappointment. I have one card sitting in a 7 that I still believe should be an 8. It will stay there, because I checked it twice and sent it anyway, so the fault was mine.

Write the grades down somewhere, even a notes app. Three years from now you won't remember what anything came back as, and your future self will thank you.

The worth-it test

Before any of this, ask the question that saves you the postage: would you be happy with an 8 and still make your money back? If not, the card probably stays raw. Grading a card you will never sell is fine if you want the slabbed look — it is your collection, organise it your way — but the real reason to grade is sale price.

Cards that make sense:

• Premier League and Champions League rookies of players who have already made it
• Basketball rookies, where the grading market is deepest
• Anything with a realistic shot at the very top grade

Cards that do not:

• Base cards from the latest Panini Premier League set, which everyone has three of
• Your own favourites with soft corners, slid in and out of a binder for years
• Anything with a crease, a dent, or centering past 60/40

If you are not sure what a card is worth raw, look it up in the catalogue before you spend money sending it anywhere. Grading a card worth pennies is a hobby in itself, but it is not a financial one.
