Card grading companies are the firms that inspect your trading cards, give them a condition score, and seal them in a holder that cannot be opened without leaving marks. That is the whole job, but the choice of company matters far more than the process itself. In the UK you are also choosing how long your card is away from you, what the postage costs, and how easy it will be to sell when it comes home.
What card grading companies actually do
A grader checks four things on every card: centering, corners, edges and surface. Each area gets a score and the weakest area drives the overall grade. A card with clean corners but a dinked edge is an 8, not a 9, no matter how good the rest looks.
The card goes into a slab with the grade printed on the label. You stop handling it and start trusting the number. Some companies give you subgrades so you can see exactly which part let you down. Others give you one figure and expect you to live with it.
The name on the label matters because buyers treat it as shorthand. The same card in one slab can sell for more than the identical card in another slab, not because the card changed but because the market trusts the name. You are paying for the grade and for the label together.

PSA card grading is the default. Sell a slab at a card fair and the first question will be "is that a PSA?" Not "what grade is it" — is it in that holder. That is not rational, but it is the market. For football cards the effect is even stronger, because the buyer base is less experienced than the people dealing with the older American sports.
Beckett card grading is for the detail people. Every card gets subgrades for centering, corners, edges and surface, so you can point at exactly what held the grade back. There is also the black label, which appears when every subgrade is perfect at once; collectors treat it the way the rest of us treat a scratchcard win.
CGC card grading is the crossover from the comics shelf. They know their way around slabbed paper and their holders are clean and simple. Football collectors do not reach for the name as often yet, and that matters when you come to sell.
TAG card grading and MGC card grading: the newer options
TAG card grading is the tech option. A machine measures the card, and the grade arrives with a detailed report you can pull up on your phone. Some collectors love the objectivity. Others will tell you a computer has never felt whether a surface is actually smooth, and surface feel is part of the condition.
MGC card grading is the home-grown option. You post to a UK address and the card comes back without the customs form and the international waiting game that follow the American names. You hear it more and more at card fairs around the country. The slabs look sharp and the whole idea is grading without losing sleep over a parcel crossing an ocean.
Football card grading deserves its own conversation
Football card grading is younger than its American cousin and it behaves differently. The products that matter are Panini and Topps: Premier League and Champions League boxes, high-end inserts, autographs and numbered parallels. The weekly packets we all stuck into binders as kids are not the cards you grade. Match Attax stays in the binder; it does not go in a submission box.
What drives the grading market is the same thing that drives football itself: youth, form and hype. When a young player breaks through, his early cards get sent off in batches and the graded copies become the ones with real value. That is when football card grading pays — when the market is hot and the card has a clear identity.

PSA card grading UK: the postage question
PSA card grading UK submissions go one of two ways: direct, or through a UK submission service that batches parcels for several collectors. Direct gives you control over exactly when the card leaves your hands. A middleman gives you company on the trip over and, usually, a calmer experience of the customs paperwork.
Both mean your card spends time in transit, and that is the part British collectors worry about most. Postage, packaging and turnaround are the real grading story in this country. A card can be out of your hands for a long stretch, most of it travelling rather than being looked at. The sensible approach is to plan for a long trip and be pleasantly surprised when it comes home sooner.
The habits that matter: put the card in a penny sleeve, then a semi-rigid holder — never bare in a jiffy bag. Photograph it front and back the day you pack it. Write down every card in the parcel and keep the tracking number where you can find it. Declare the contents honestly on the customs form; a false declaration voids the insurance exactly when you need it.

What to send, and what to leave in the binder
Spend the postage on cards that justify it:
- Rookie cards of established or rapidly rising players
- Autographs and numbered parallels from premium sets
- Low-numbered inserts from the high-end Panini and Topps ranges
- Cards already in exceptional condition
Leave everything else in the binder. A card worth pocket money does not become worth grading just because it looks clean. The fee, the postage and the wait do not shrink to fit the card.
Centering: the thing that drops your grade
Centering is the easiest flaw to spot at home and the easiest way to waste a grading fee. The borders around the image should be roughly equal on all four sides. Graders work to tolerances around 55/45, and once you are past that the grade falls before the corners are even judged. The naked eye lies; measure.

So which grading company should you pick?
Choose by your goal. If you are selling, PSA is the safest floor; it is the name buyers search for first. If you want to see exactly what happened to your card, Beckett gives you subgrades and TAG gives you the report. None of this matters as much as the obvious thing: the grader gets your card home in the same condition it left you. That is the only promise that counts, and it is the one you cannot control. Pack it properly, track it, and let it go.
