Graders measure card centering by comparing the physical width of opposite borders to determine how perfectly the printed image sits on the cardboard canvas. They do this by calculating a mathematical ratio for the horizontal plane and a separate ratio for the vertical plane. While the player's action shot is the focal point of the card, those blank strips of cardboard framing the image dictate whether a card is considered gem mint or merely near mint.
When you pull a massive Connor McDavid rookie card or a vintage Wayne Gretzky, your eyes naturally gravitate to the player. Graders, however, look at the blank space. They isolate the borders to measure the exact shift of the printing press.
How Graders Measure the Two Axes
Every sports card has two distinct axes. Graders look at the horizontal plane, which is the left border versus the right border, and the vertical plane, which is the top border versus the bottom border.
To find the ratio, graders measure the physical width of the left border and the right border in millimetres. They add those two numbers together to get the total horizontal border width. Then, they divide the left border's width by that total. If the left border is exactly the same width as the right border, the ratio is a perfect 50/50.
If the left border holds more of the total blank space, the ratio shifts. A card might measure 55/45 left-to-right and 50/50 top-to-bottom. This process is repeated for the top and bottom borders. Whether it is a modern Panini Prizm football card with metallic borders or a vintage Topps baseball card with standard white borders, the mathematical approach remains identical.
The Worst Axis Rules the Grade
You might evaluate a classic Michael Jordan basketball card that looks perfectly framed from left to right. However, if the top border is noticeably thicker than the bottom border, that flawless horizontal symmetry will not save your overall grade.
Graders evaluate both axes independently, but they apply the centering tolerance based on the worse of the two measurements. The weakest link dictates the ceiling for the card’s final grade. If your left-to-right ratio qualifies for a gem mint grade, but your top-to-bottom ratio falls into the mint category, the card will not receive the gem mint designation.
Graders do not average the two axes together. Averaging them would mask severe misalignments. For instance, averaging a perfect 50/50 horizontal axis with a disastrous 90/10 vertical axis would result in a mathematically passing grade, even though the card is visibly miscut. Instead, grading companies demand that both axes independently meet the strict threshold required for the assigned grade.
Front vs. Back Tolerances
The front of a sports card is the display piece. It holds the player action shot, the foil stamping, and the team logo. Because collectors display the front of the slab, grading companies apply their strictest centering tolerance to this side. For a card to achieve a flawless grade, the front must generally sit within a hair's breadth of perfect symmetry.
The back of the card, however, is a completely different story. The reverse side holds the stat lines, biographical text, and secondary logos. Graders recognize that collectors do not display their slabs backwards on a shelf. Consequently, the centering tolerance for the back of a card is significantly more lenient.
A card can often exhibit a 75/25 ratio on the reverse and still secure a gem mint grade, provided the front is immaculate. During the printing processes of previous decades, sheets were often misaligned when they were flipped over to print the reverse side. What Does 60/40 Centering Actually Look Like?
When collectors discuss 60/40 centering, they are describing an image that is slightly shifted, but not so severely that it ruins the aesthetic appeal of the card. In a 60/40 scenario, one border contains sixty per cent of the total blank space on that axis, while the opposite border contains forty per cent.
To the naked eye, 60/40 centering is noticeable if you look closely, but it does not immediately scream that the card is miscut. For example, if you are looking at a modern Bowman Chrome baseball prospect card, a 60/40 shift might mean the left border is just a fraction of a millimetre thicker than the right border. It is a subtle drift.
Many collectors struggle to eyeball the difference between a 55/45 ratio and a 60/40 ratio without a measurement tool. This specific ratio is incredibly important because it often represents the absolute maximum shift allowed for a pristine grade. If the image drifts any further toward the edge, pushing into 65/35 territory, the card will drop a full grade, which drastically alters its desirability on the secondary market.
Understanding PSA Centering Standards
When Canadian collectors prepare submissions, psa centering is usually the primary concern. Professional Sports Authenticator evaluates borders strictly, but they do publish clear guidelines on what their graders will accept.
To achieve the coveted psa 10 centering, the front of the card must generally measure 55/45 to 60/40 or better, while the back must measure 75/25 or better. This means a PSA 10 does not have to be a mathematically perfect 50/50 on the front. A slight shift is entirely permissible within their gem mint parameters.
This allowance accounts for the reality of commercial printing. Whether it is a modern Upper Deck Young Guns hockey card or a vintage soccer sticker, microscopic variations happen on the factory cutting room floor. The key factor is eye appeal. If the shift is within that 60/40 threshold and does not distract from the player's image, the card can still capture the top tier grade. Borderless Cards and Tricky Designs
Not every card features crisp, white borders. Measuring card centering on these designs requires a different approach from the grading companies.
Since graders cannot measure a blank border, they look for predictable, static design elements. They will measure the distance from the physical edge of the card to a team logo, a foil nameplate, or a printed border line hidden within the interior design. They compare these measurements against a known, perfectly centred copy of the exact same card in their database.
Vintage cards pose their own unique challenges. Rough cuts, common in older O-Pee-Chee hockey sets, can make a border look jagged and uneven. In these cases, graders measure from the narrowest point of the border to determine the most severe deviation. They do not give the card the benefit of the doubt by measuring the widest point of a jagged edge.
How to Read Your Cards Before Submitting
Submitting unvetted cards is a quick way to waste your grading fees. You must evaluate your stack at home first.
Start by placing the card flat on a dark surface under a bright, neutral-coloured light. The dark background provides high contrast, making the lighter borders of the card pop. This contrast tricks your eye into seeing the symmetry—or lack thereof—much more clearly than holding the card in your hand against a cluttered background.
